5 Ways Mary Embodies the Feminine Divine

Mother Mary is often painted as a perfect, glowing figure. She truly IS the ultimate holy mother. But let’s take a step back and remember: Mary was human, and that’s what makes her story truly profound. She wasn’t just an icon draped in heavenly robes—she faced real struggles and persevered through extraordinary challenges.

Imagine being a young, unmarried woman in ancient times, suddenly visited by an angel with life-changing news and - BAM - you’re going to give birth to a child destined to change the world. The weight of that responsibility would be overwhelming for anyone. Mary, however, leaned into her calling with strength and grace, navigating the societal pressures and personal sacrifices that came with her role.

Her story is not about unattainable perfection but about courage, faith, and resilience. Recognizing Mary’s humanity allows us to connect with her on a deeper level. She wasn’t distant from life’s hardships—she lived them, embraced them, and transformed them into a legacy of love and compassion.

Alex and I were invited to explore the “human side” of Mary tonight through a work shop by Rev. Debra McKnight and Rev. Dr. Jane Florence, using Debra’s Mama Mary Guide. We were asked to discover Mary as both a parent and a practitioner of faith. Their workshop included a guided art time craft where we painted an oracle card that resonated with us. It was a chance to reflect on her story and our own spiritual journey.

Personally, I would love to embrace more of my “Mary Energy.” She is, after all, the embodiment of the Feminine Divine. Her story invites us to reconnect with our inner strength, compassion, and creative spirit—qualities that can guide us through life’s challenges and joys. By channeling Mary’s energy, we can find balance between our human experiences and spiritual growth.

5 Ways Mary Embodies the Feminine Divine and How to Follow Her Lead:

  1. She Embodies Unshakable Strength: The Feminine Divine is about finding strength in vulnerability. Mary showed resilience and courage in the face of immense challenges. To follow her example, we can embrace life’s uncertainties with faith and grace, knowing that strength often comes from perseverance.

  2. She Represents Nurturing and Compassion: The Feminine Divine emphasizes care, empathy, and the nurturing of others. Mary’s love and compassion are central to her story. We can live this out by showing kindness to others, listening deeply, and offering support where it’s needed.

  3. She Honors Both the Sacred and the Mundane: Mary’s life was a balance of holy moments and ordinary, human experiences. The Feminine Divine calls us to see the sacred in everyday life. Practicing mindfulness and finding joy in small acts can help us connect to this divine balance.

  4. She Inspires Creative Expression: The Feminine Divine is a source of creativity and self-expression. Mary’s story has inspired countless works of art and devotion. We can honor this by exploring our own creativity—whether through art, music, writing, or any form of self-expression that connects us to our spirituality.

  5. She Models Faith in Action: The Feminine Divine is not passive; it’s about taking action rooted in love and purpose. Mary didn’t just accept her role—she lived it fully. We can follow her lead by taking meaningful steps toward our goals, guided by love and a desire to make a positive impact.

Tonight, we were given the space to reflect, create, and dive deeply into the Feminine Divine energy that Mary embodies. By exploring her humanity, we found wisdom for our own journeys—grit to face life’s challenges, grace to show compassion, and a spark of creativity to keep moving forward with purpose. We left inspired to carry this energy into our daily lives, with open hearts and renewed faith.
